Pele's lava flow on the Big Island of Hawaii has destroyed hundreds of homes and displaced thousands of people. There is an urgent need for housing for the thousands displaced by the lava, bad air quality, or isolation from severed roads.
DomeGaia's HoopHouse is designed to be aesthetically pleasing, inexpensive, quick to construct for temporary (semi-permanent) housing for refugees from natural disasters. It can be built in less than 2 days for under $2,000 in material expenses. Made of aluminum tubing frame, 1/8" plywood interior, 1" insulation, and waterproof fabric exterior. It is lightweight and portable but can also be anchored to the ground with an AirCrete slab. The HoopHouse dimensions are 12' wide x 8.5' high and as long as is practical. For example, a 12' wide x 40' long structure could easily house a small family. |
